SALT LAKE CITY – It’s Utah’s first Workplace Safety Week, and it kicked off Monday at one of the largest active construction sites in Salt Lake City.

Lt. Gov. Greg Bell and Utah Senator Karen Mayne, D-District 5, were at the University of Utah’s Ambulatory Care Project to promote safer workplaces.

Joseph Chandler, who lost his arm after being pulled into a conveyor belt, also spoke at the event to remind people to be aware of their surroundings and to stay safe while working.

“I personally am very grateful for these safety programs. Just so we don’t have to see more people go through situations such as myself,” Chandler said.

Chandler said people should always wear their safety equipment, be properly trained for the job they are doing, and be aware of the potential dangers in their workplace.
