SALT LAKE CITY - Police are looking for the suspect in an overnight shooting in Sugar House.

Police say the 40-year-old victim was found lying on the side of Highland Drive just after 11 p.m. Wednesday. The actual shooting appears to have happened just east of there, at a duplex near 1246 Stratford Ave (2600 South).

"Was beaten with some kind of club, also received a gunshot wound. He was found laying in the middle of Highland Drive," said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Dave Craycroft.

Neighbors say they heard gunshots coming from that apartment, something that came as no surprise. They say it's been a trouble spot for years and that there had been a report of a sexual assault at the same address the night before the shooting.

"I heard I think 5 gunshots. Then I heard somebody yelling for help," said neighbor Bob Abeyta. "We ran out and sure enough somebody'd been shot right across the street here."

Neighbors say a woman lives in that apartment with at least one daughter and possibly a boyfriend.

One woman, who didn't want to be identified, says there are constant issues regarding the apartment. She says she overheard officers say they'd been called to the same address just one day earlier for a sexual assault call.

"I'm scared to death and I'm mad," she said. "It's a nice, safe community and there's families with small children all around this block and none of us should have to deal with this. None of us should be scared to play in our own yard."

Salt Lake City police won't comment on the possible sexual assault call or if the shooting might be related. They also aren't saying who lives in the residence or who the victim is.

Despite being beaten and shot, the victim survived and is hospitalized in stable condition.
