SALT LAKE CITY – This year is the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Highway, and students at Hawthorne Elementary put signs up identifying the historic roadway.

The Lincoln Highway was the first hard-surfaced road stretching from New York City to San Francisco’s Lincoln Park, and the road ran along 2100 South in Sugar House.

Students at Hawthorne Elementary have been studying the highway and found out it didn’t have a sign identifying itself, so they wrote a letter to the city asking to put one in.

“I think it’s important for children to know a little bit about where they came from and their regular class was studying the United States this year. So, this gave us a chance to go in a little deeper and to figure out how transportation, communication and basic needs are met,” said Sheri Sohm at Hawthorne Elementary.

Two signs memorializing the Lincoln Highway were placed near the Sugar House monument on Tuesday. The students say they’re happy they did something to help change the street, rather than just learning about it.
