WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – A man who allegedly pulled a gun at the West Valley City Police Dept. lobby is facing multiple felony charges.

Police say that on Monday, April 29, 39-year-old James Kammeyer walked into the lobby of the building, demanding to speak to an officer face-to-face.

When asked to remove his hands from his pocket, Kammeyer allegedly pulled a handgun out of his pocket and pointed it at a desk officer and records clerk. The officer retreated into the bulletproof glass enclosure and called for backup.

Police say that when other officers arrived, one of them fired multiple shots, hitting Kammeyer twice in his right arm. He was hospitalized then booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on multiple charges. No one else was injured.

He now faces five third-degree felony charges: threat of terrorism, three counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

Kammeyer has a history with the law, including a conviction for sexual abuse of a child. He was scheduled to be removed from the sex offender registry in January 2014.

Police also confronted a knife-wielding Kammeyer last December. They say he claimed his estranged wife was trying to take his kids and that he wanted officers to kill him. That incident ended peacefully.

He reportedly told police last December that he wanted to die by suicide by cop.

Kammeyer also had a domestic incident the day before the incident at the West Valley City Police Dept. building, West Jordan police say. He was charged with one count of criminal mischief and two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child for that incident.
