HYRUM, Utah — Two families were forced out of their home after a fire in Hyrum on Friday morning.

The fire began around 11:30 a.m. on Friday at 7400 South and State Road 165 in Hyrum, which is near Logan. The fire was upgraded to two-alarm fire due to a lack of water supply in the unincorporated part of Cache County. Additional crews were called in.

Kevin Maughan, Cache County Fire, said the lack of available water made it a difficult job.

“Water has been an issue here in the county,” he said. “We have no hydrants. We had to have a shuttling system put together here. It’s just been a hard, mean fire fight.”

Fire crews said propane cylinders underneath a grill in the garage likely fueled the flame. The fire was burning near a gas meter located next to the carport of the house, according to a press release from the Cache County Fire District.

Questar Gas Spokesperson Darren Shepherd said they were notified about the fire around 12:30 p.m. Shepherd said they shut off the gas to the house, and the firefighters put out the flames.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damages are estimated to total about $100,000.
