SALT LAKE CITY - Downtown Salt Lake City has already some big changes, and there's more in store as the city finalizes plans for its new performing arts center.

Tom Moriarity, managing principal for the consulting company in charge of development planning, says the theater itself will bring hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.

On Tuesday morning, Moriarity outlined the perks and plans for the center and what it could mean for the economy.

"A number of components, some of which are cultural some of which are civic, but they're all together. It's only going to activate street use more," Moriarity said.

The center is a proposed 2,500-seat state of the art theater located on Salt Lake City's Main Street between 100 and 200 South. It comes after years of research by community leaders to see what impact a proposed center would have on the city.

"Studying every aspect of how the center could serve as an economic development factor. In addition, how it would attract new patrons to downtown area and work with existing theaters so that they all work together and enhance Salt Lake City arts district," said Helen Langan, senior adviser to the mayor.

The center could break ground as early as January 2014 and would take around two years to finish.
