SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah House passed a bill that would make it easier to carry a gun in public.

House Bill 268passed by a vote of 54-12 Thursday.

Sponsored by Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clinton, the bill would change the law police now use to monitor people with dangerous weapons in public environments.

Currently, a person can be charged with disorderly conduct for carrying a gun in public. If passed, the bill would change that by requiring certain circumstances or behaviors to constitute disorderly conduct.

“The mere fact that you’re legally carrying a gun does not constitute disorderly conduct. You actually have to be participating in behavior that constitutes disorderly conduct,” Rep. Ray said in January.

The bill will now be considered by the Utah Senate.
