SALT LAKE CITY -- More than 600 students from across the state took their shot at the Utah StateNational Archery in the Schools tournament on Saturday.

Students as young as fourth-graders participated in the third annual state tournament, which was held at the Salt Palace. The event hosted 28 schools with archery programs from as far away as Southern Utah and Logan.

Kaylee Vogel, a physical education specialist at Wellington Elementary, said age isn’t necessarily big factor, using an example of a fourth grader and a ninth grader.

“They both did just fine,” she said. “They both got 9's, and they both got 7's. It was pretty equal with things."

Competitor Brayden Powell said the event was cause for excitement.

“This is my first time competing, and I’ve been looking forward to it for a month now."

Utah is the 32nd state to participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program.
