LAYTON, Utah -- The Western JROTC Air Rifle Championship is being held at the Davis Conference Center in Layton.
This event was for the Army and Air Force branches of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. The event for the Navy and Marines branches takes place February 21-23.
Brad Donaho, program coordinator for the civilian marksmanship program, described the event.
"This is [an] Olympic style air rifle event fired at 10 meters with air rifles, .177 caliber rifles, but not the typical ones you’re going to find at Wal-Mart,” he said.
One team from Clearfield High School, along with teams from California, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Alaska, were selected to move on to the national competition.
Maj. Kit Workman is with Clearfield High School’s JROTC program said they were excited to have the opportunity to compete at a high level, and he said they don’t often get that chance in the West. He said the shooters have been training hard.
"This is the hard part you know because you train and you train and you train, and shooting is such a mental sport, it’s that mental process they have to refine,” he said.
Sean Anderson is a member of the Clearfield team, and he said they will face strong competition.
"We got Volcano Vista from new Mexico,” he said. “They're a tough team to beat this year. The past couple of years they've been the top in the nation, and were pretty much neck and neck with them. It’s going to be a tough competition this year."
