SEVIER COUNTY — A woman was injured when a rifle accidentally went off while she and a friend were stopped to change a flat tire on Sunday.

Cheyenne Hibberd, 18, and Jesse Warenski, 22, were on their way to Richfield, Utah, when they stopped at a family member’s home to change a flat tire. According to a press release from the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, Warenski had reached into the back of the truck for a tire iron when the gun, a 30-06 rifle, went off.

Hibberd told police all she could think about was taking a walk, and she started moving along the road when she felt pain on the left side of her stomach. She pulled her shirt up and saw she was bleeding. The pair called for help, and Hibberd was taken by ambulance to a hospital. From there she was taken by life flight helicopter to Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, according to the press release. Her condition was listed as fair.

Doctors said the bullet entered Hibberd on the left side and exited above her right breast. The doctor said it appeared to be a large-caliber bullet wound, and they did not find a bullet or any shrapnel in Hibberd’s X-rays, according to the press release.

The detectives investigating do not believe there was any foul play or criminal intent in the incident.
