SALT LAKE CITY — A new seat belt bill passed through the Utah Senate Health and Human Services committee today on a 3-2 vote, and it will now go to the Senate floor to be voted on.

Senate Bill 114 would make not wearing a seatbelt a primary offense on any road with a speed limit of more than 55 mph, which means someone can be pulled over solely for not wearing a seatbelt while on these roads.

The bill’s chief sponsor is Senator Luz Robles, D-Salt Lake County.
