SALT LAKE CITY--The Granite School District held its annual Art Night Live on Monday, and 50 of their top art students came to compete for cash prizes.

Students at the event had four hours to create a work of art in one of five categories: drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpting or wheel-thrown pottery. The cash prizes totaled $1,200. The event was sponsored by the Granite Education Foundation.

Holly Nelson volunteers with the Granite Education Foundation, and she said the event is about more than the money for these students.

“The judges are local artists who are artists for a living, so they are not just giving them criticism, they are giving them encouragement to say, ‘hey, you can pursue this.  What if you tried this?’ Give them maybe a few ideas,” Nelson said.

This is the tenth year the Granite Education Foundation has held this event. They had the help of a grant from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation.
