SALT LAKE CITY -- Since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary student safety has become a top concern, and one local company is offering a system designed to make students safer.
Tom Dobson said his company, Audio Enhancement, was approached to create technology that could aid administrators in a school emergency, and they quickly accepted the challenge.
“We had administrators and teachers coming to us and saying, do you have any kind of panic button or an alert button that can go on the microphone? So we started developing that technology, and what we came up with is called the SAFE System,” Dobson said.
The SAFE (Security Alert For Education) System uses cameras, microphones and monitoring stations to better help teachers and administrators in case of an emergency. Teachers are equipped with a microphone that can be worn around the neck, and they can trigger an alert with the press of a button.
“At that point the administration can make the decision as to what the response is, based on images from a camera in a classroom, based on, you know, them understanding where the incident is happening, they can make the decision on what the next response should be,” Dobson said.
SAFE System creators said the panic button can be used for emergencies ranging from medical problems to something akin to what happened in Newtown, Connecticut.
