ALPINE, Utah -- The Alpine City Council met with residents to discuss a proposed drug rehab group home Tuesday night.

Some residents are not happy with the idea of the drug rehabilitation center opening in their community.

The ten bedroom home could house up to 18 people. An Alpine city ordinance only allows for up to four non-relatives to live in one home. However, federal statutes declare people with substance abuse problems are considered disabled and federal housing laws say the city can not discriminate.

The owner of the Alpine Lodge Rehab Center said the facility offers therapy, staffing and security. She said the center would be very beneficial in the area because of the high prescription drug use problem.

The council did not vote on the issue Tuesday and instead asked the owner of the home for more information about the plan.

The council will address the issue again at their meeting on January 29.
