SALT LAKE CITY – Subzero temperatures can mean major problems for Utah homeowners and their pipes. Plumbers say the best defense is to take preventative measures before the problem arises.

Plumbers suggest doing things like insulating pipes with foam can be a major help, and local home improvement stores say products that prevent and repair frozen pipes are selling out fast.

“Once it starts to freeze up, water expands and then pipes can break and you’ve got a big leak or a flooded basement,” said Dale Parrish, Home Depot consultant.

Parrish says turning up your thermostat can also help thaw frigid basement pipes.
