GENOLA, Utah — A Utah County home was destroyed in a fire early Friday morning.

The Genola Fire Department was first notified of the fire around 3 a.m. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the attic of the home was fully enfulfed in flames.

“It had been burning for at least a couple hours. It was unoccupied. It’s a house that’s been remodeled several times, so there’s a lot of false walls and everything in there,” said Chief Greg Smith, Genola Fire Department. “As we were fighting it, doing an interior attack, the roof started to collapse on us.”

Smith said the cold weather exacerbated the firefighting efforts, as ice formed around the scene and firefighters needed to take breaks periodically to warm up.

Fire officials were investigating Friday morning to determine the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported.
