SALT LAKE CITY – As Utah’s air quality worsens, state regulators are working on a solution.

They include everything from regulations on the sale of aerosol deodorants and hair spray to prohibiting word burning in fireplaces. There is also an increase of rules in motion that will force California-style changes in consumer products and more rules for businesses.

“The individual controls on each source or each individual are very small but when you take the millions of people or thousands of businesses involved, it adds up quickly and we’re talking hundreds of tons of emissions reductions on a typical winter day,” said Bryce Bird, director of the Utah Division of Air Quality.

The process will continue over the next few months as the department continues to find sources of excess emissions.

According to the DAQ, Utahns send out 365 tons of emissions every day.
