SANDY, Utah -- Two homes in Sandy were flooded early Monday morning after a fire hydrant pipe burst.

A police officer who was patrolling on Bell Canyon Road first noticed the leaking water at about 2:30 a.m. Water was flowing down the street and into yards.

Fire officials responded to the scene and notified homeowners of the flooding.

"My window well right there was just totally full and we just started grabbing buckets and bailing out water," said Fred Belk, whose home was affected by the flooding.

Belk said he had about 18 inches of water in their basement and his family room was destroyed.

Fire officials and public works crews were on the scene Monday to dig up the ground surrounding the broken pipe and determine what caused it to break.
