A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was hospitalized Monday night after being struck by a Jeep on Interstate 15 in Salt Lake County.

The incident happened at 6:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-15 at 7600 South.

Trooper Brent “BJ” Shelby was setting flares to direct traffic away from a crash scene. A passing Jeep slid into the left wall of the freeway, then into him.

Shelby was able to walk from his truck to an ambulance and complained of head, neck, leg and back pain. UHP said the main injury was to his knee.

Shelby was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was released Tuesday afternoon and continues to recover at home.

“This is a good reminder for motorists to keep their speeds within the posted limits– and to even reduce their speeds further during inclement weather. Also, motorists need to ‘Slow Down And Move Over’ whenever they see emergency vehicles ahead with their emergency equipment activated. We are very fortunate that this did not turn out worse than it did for our Trooper, due to someone’s unsafe driving actions” said Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson in a statement released to FOX 13.

The Unified Police Department is handling the investigation.
