SANDY, Utah - A man was badly burned in a duplex fire in Sandy on Saturday afternoon.Crews are battling a house fire in Sandy on Saturday afternoon.

The fire started in the kitchen area of one unit in a duplex near 250 East Julie Anna Drive (8295 South) at around 2:15 p.m.

The man and woman inside that unit were able to get outside and notify the woman and two children inside the other unit, so all were able to escape without injury.

"She had to get out as fast as she could and luckily enough she wasn't injured, the neighbor girl wasn't injured and our five-month-old boy and five-year-old girl weren't injured at all," said Andrew Eresuma, who lives in the duplex.

Officials say the man in the first unit decided to go back inside the burning building to rescue his dog.

He was burned badly enough on his back and chest that he was transported to the University of Utah Medical Center via medical helicopter. His current condition is unknown.

Eresuma says his unit is not too badly damaged. He's mostly worried about his neighbor.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
