WEST VALLEY CITY — Part of a West Valley City neighborhood was evacuated and a nearby school was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after a shooting.

Mike Powell with the West Valley City Police Dept. says officers had responded to 3189 South Cantwell Street at around noon for a reported domestic-related dispute.

At around 1:40 p.m., they received several reports of shots fired in the area. Officers returned to the residents and reported hearing additional shots being fired.

Powell says the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Wayne Parry, continued to fire rounds at West Valley City officers as they arrived.

Initial attempts to communicate with Parry were unsuccessful, but officers were eventually able to convince Parry to surrender to police.

Powell says Parry was given medical attention for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the jaw. He was transported to a local hospital for further medical attention.

Parry then barricaded himself inside his home and additional shots were heard coming from the residence.

He will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail and will likely face several charges.

West Lake Jr. High School, which is about a block away, was placed on lockdown, according to Granite School District Spokesman Ben Horsley.

All of the students were safe and accounted for. They were kept inside the school unless parents or guardians picked them up. The lockdown was lifted around 4:30 p.m.

About 18-20 residents were evacuated from the neighborhood.
