SALT LAKE CITY – The number of domestic violence deaths is on the rise.

More than a thousand requests for shelter were turned down because of lack of funding. The Utah Domestic Violence Council says its services have been underfunded and off the radar of legislators, despite the success of its program.

“Overall rates of domestic violence have gone down slightly but the ferocity of it and the level of violence and the lethality has gone up. So the statistics will say one in three Utah women will experience violence to one in four. Either way the statistics are horrifying,” said Peg Coleman, the executive director of the UDVC.

The Utah Domestic Violence Council is asking for support from the public. They hope residents will call the Governor’s Office this week to increase support of local non-profit domestic violence programs for 2014.
