Nearly 44 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home for the Thanksgiving holiday, according to AAA projections.
Salt Lake City International Airport officials offered some suggestions to help move travelers through the security process quickly. They encourage people to check in at home to avoid lines at the ticket desks. Presents should not be wrapped and they suggest shipping desserts instead of carrying them on the plane.
TSA agents say be patient. At approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday, the wait at security line in terminal two was about 30 minutes.
"They did a great job with parking," said Mike Sweetland, who was traveling out of the Salt Lake City International Airport. "But we knew security was going to be pretty ugly."
TSA reminds travelers of the 3-1-1 policy for liquids, gels and aerosols regarding carry on luggage. The rule says 3.4 ounces (100ml) bottle or less for all liquids, placed in a one quart-sized clear, plastic zip-top bag and one bag is allowed per passenger.
Of those traveling, about 90 percent are expected to make the trip by car.
There is some relief for them as well as gas prices have been dropping. The price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is expected to be between $3.25 and $3.40 on Thursday.
