SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Food Bank says one in seven Utah children don't know where their next meal is coming from. At the same time, Americans throw away almost as much food as they eat.
The Natural Resources Defense Council says Americans waste about 20 pounds of food per person per month. 20 percent of our landfills are food waste. Most Americans are preparing for a Thanksgiving feast on Thursday.
But for many Utahns, their Thanksgiving dinner will come with the help of strangers. The Crossroads Urban Center handed out more than 3,600 turkeys to Utah families in need this Thanksgiving.
Joesph Barnes is a tree trimmer. Business is good right now, but that's a recent change, so Barnes, his wife and two daughters were among the recipients of Thanksgiving dinner from the Crossroads Urban Center.
"There's sometimes we have to go without food and it's hard. We manage it, we manage it," Barnes said.
The Crossroads Urban Center started out with 3,712 turkeys. They had 44 left at the end of the day.
