RIVERTON, Utah -  Hundreds of elementary school kids joined thousands around the world in an attempt to break a world record.

Rosamond Elementary students are taking part in the World Speed Stacker Association’s push to break their own record of 412,000 kids stacking cups on the same day.

“It’s pretty cool to be trying to make the world record,” says fourth grader Sydney Freeman.

Cup stacking is a standard activity at Rosamond Elementary. Fourth grade teacher Laurie Benson has been teaching kids to play for years. She says it’s a fun, friendly activity.

“You can have a PE session right there at their desks in the classroom,” says Benson. “For short intervals during the day.”

Thursday the kids took over the gym, stacking cups large and small. The routine is set by the WSSA and consists of a series of three formations. The cycle is timed, and participants try to beat their own score.

“It’s a fun thing,” says Benson. “Some of the fastest times in the school are 10 seconds. The championship record for the world is 5.88.”

The school won’t know if kids around the world beat the record until all schools report their participant numbers. But for many of these kids, they’re content to just get in some practice.
