WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - Red Cross chapters across the nation are thinking of soldiers serving overseas as they prepare for the holiday season.

Thousands of Americans are working together to write letters to more than 2 million active service members and many of our nation's 24 million veterans. The Red Cross of Utah visited Monticello Academy on Monday where students stayed late to help thank our nation's heroes.

"We would be a vulnerable country without them. They are fighting for us out there," said Jacob Gonzalez, Student Body President at Monticello Academy.

Officials with the Red Cross say that while writing a card may seem like a small gesture, it means a lot to the people who receive them.

"We have people in our family and friends who have served this country so to see all these cute kids make the cards for them and see something that serves other people, it just makes me happy to see all these people stay after and spend their time doing it," said Emily McClean.

The Red Cross will be accepting cards for service men and women through Dec. 7. They can be dropped off at local Red Cross chapters.
