SALT LAKE CITY – Outgoing Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon is proposing a 17.5 percent increase in property taxes.

Corroon presented his $788 million 2013 budget to the County Council on Thursday morning, saying the hike would generate nearly $31 million and fully restore employee salary cuts from 2008 and 2009.

If the Republican-led council approves the proposal, property taxes would increase $64 a year on a home worth $238,000, starting a year from now.

The added funding would also pay for deferred maintenance, help pay for escalating jail costs and add 25 county-wide employees.
