MURRAY, Utah -- Murray Police have a man in custody after he allegedly attacked multiple people with a hatchet on Tuesday.

The suspect broke into a home near 1200 East and 6500 South with a hatchet and forced entry into a bedroom where he allegedly attacked the homeowner at the ankles, according to police.

A second resident at the home came to assist and was struck by the hatchet. Neither person sustained injury, according to police.

The suspect left the home and used the hatchet and banged on the door of another home, but did not gain entry.

He went on to another house where he forced entry into the backyard and broke windows in the garage, according to police.

The suspect became engaged in a standoff with police after he climbed onto the roof of the Bill Lend's home.

"I thought it was a bad dream," said Lend. "I had no idea what to think at the time, I just thought, 'oh my gosh, this happens to other people not us.' But, I'm just glad that the police were here and they took care of the situation. They did a fantastic, heroic job on maintaining everything."

Officers attempted to subdue him with a Taser gun, but failed. According to Lend, they also used a garden hose and eventually put a police dog on the roof as they worked to bring the man down.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., the suspect surrendered, according to police.

Murray police said there was a possibility the man was under the influence of drugs. Although he was taken to the hospital, the nature of his injuries is not clear.

Police have not released the suspect's name and said charges are pending.
