BRIGHAM CITY, Utah - The new Brigham City Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints allowed the media inside to get a sneak preview of the building, which features original handcrafted art.

The temple is the 139th for the LDS church and the fourteenth in Utah. Church leaders say that unlike many of the modern LDS temples, the Brigham City building will have an historic pioneer feel to mirror the historic pioneer culture of Brigham City.

"It's a new, modern temple, but the design is reminiscent of the historic early temples of the church with round windows and architectural detail that's really beautiful and unique," said Elder William R. Walker, Executive Director for the LDS Church Temple Dept.

The temple is larger than most modern temple and features wood from Africa, marble from Turkey and original paintings by local artists.

"The church feels like as much as it is practical, let's get the most beautiful materials we can, let's get the finest workman we can find, to build a beautiful temple that's beautifully done and lasts forever," said Walker.

The new temple will serve church members through northwestern Utah and parts of southern Idaho. A public open house begins on Aug. 18 and runs through Sept. 15. The temple will be formally dedicated on Sept. 23.
