Emergency room doctors at Primary Children's Medical Center say they're seeing an increase in eye injuries caused by the improper use of airsoft guns.
Most airsoft guns fire small plastic pellets which can cause several types serious eye injuries.
"When the pellet hits the eye, it can cause lacerations of the eyelid, it can cause corneal abrasions. But, more significant than that, the blunt trauma to the eye can cause bleeding inside the eye itself," said Dr. Joy Soprano, Primary Children's Medical Center. "I've seen pellets embedded in the eyeball itself and a lot of these kids have really poor vision when they first come to the emergency department.
Doctors say airsoft gun-related eye injuries can be prevented by the use of eye protection such as safety glasses and goggles.
