SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Transit Authority is buying new buses that use natural gas.

Every year UTA retires old buses and replaces them. This year they have ordered 10 new buses that used compressed natural gas (CNG).

“CNG is a local resource; it’s produced in the Uinta Basin,” says UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter. “We can support a local industry and it’s more stable as a fuel source.”

Carpenter says using CNG-run buses will be less expensive and is one way to prevent future fare hikes.

Utah has an option to buy 126 more buses.

The new buses will start service next year.
