A new Polynesian charter school is approved and it is slated to be the first of it's kind.

The Granite School District Board met Thursday morning to hear the pitch from those who want a new school that will target low-income, underrepresented students with an emphasis on Pacific Islanders.

The main goal is to close the achievement gaps in the community.

"We have such community support," said Angela Hansen Iaono, Board President, Salt Lake Charter School.  "We've got NFL football players who are lending their support financially as well as the community who is overwhelmingly in support of our efforts to put this school forward."

The state approves about eight charter school a year, but only funds four of those schools.
